ABUELO
The premises of the history of Abuelo rum begin with Valera Hermanos, a company founded in 1908 by Don José Varela Blanco, a young Spanish immigrant who chose to settle in the Panamanian city of Pesé. He then created the first sugar industry in the very young republic, in the hacienda San Isidro, taking advantage of the fertile valley in the heart of the country.
In 1936, following the desire expressed by his three sons, Don José Varela Blanco began to distill alcohol from cane juice. From the start, the brand stood out for the quality of its spirits. The distillery was modernized in 1976 and diversified its products. It was at this time that Abuelo rum appeared on the market, which quickly became the flagship product of the firm.
Today, Varela Hermanos remains the Panamanian leader in the production of spirits, combining tradition and modernity.
